Number theory

Number theory has a great tradition in our institute, with world-famous mathematicians such as Alfréd Rényi, Pál Turán and Pál Erdős laying the foundations for number theory research.

The research areas of the Number Theory Department focus on the main questions of analytic number theory and additive combinatorics. Within analytic number theory, the main directions of research are the classical problems of prime number theory, such as certain approximations to the Goldbach conjecture and the twin prime conjecture, as well as the theory of automorphic forms and automorphic L-functions. The additive combinatorics problems examined are primarily related to the cardinality and structure of sum and difference sets, both in the set of integers and in other algebraic structures.

The Number Theory Department has been holding seminars on Tuesdays at 2 pm in the Main Lecture Hall of the Rényi Institute for many years. These seminars are attended by number theorists from Budapest working at universities, and in recent years, even from Debrecen, who have joined online.
