Maryna Viazovska receives the László Fejes Tóth Medal at the Hungarian Science Festival

The László Fejes Tóth Medal will be awarded on November 10 in the Main Lecture Hall of the Rényi Institute. This year's recipient is Maryna Viazovska, professor at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne and winner of numerous prestigious mathematics awards, including the Fields Medal. Prior to the award ceremony, Maryna Viazovska will give a lecture entitled "Polynomial Freiman-Ruzsa, Reed-Muller codes and Shannon capacity."

The Rényi Institute is 75 years old

The Rényi Institute is celebrating its 75th anniversary with a series of lectures. The ceremony on October 28 will take place in the main hall of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, featuring lectures by two mathematicians who have been awarded the Fields Medal, Wendelin Werner and Alessio Figalli. In the afternoon, the institute's current and former directors and leading researchers will present Rényi's past, its achievements, and discuss the challenges of the future.

Efficient quantum simulation: a new algorithm could even help in material discovery

The procedure, which András Gilyén, a mathematician at the Rényi Institute, wrote a paper about, could be a building block for the first practical applications of quantum computers. The article was recently published in the journal Nature.

Richard Wiegandt, Doctor of Mathematical Sciences, retired scientific advisor at the Alfréd Rényi Institute for Mathematical Research, and former head of the institute's Algebra Department, passed away on October 12, 2025, at the age of 94.
