Balázs Patkós, senior research fellow at the Rényi Institute, spoke about the history and development of combinatorics and the role of Hungarian mathematicians in this field. The program, entitled Closer to Mathematics, discussed the importance of combinatorics and how this field of mathematics came into focus three decades ago with the advent of computers and algorithms. Hungarian combinatorics has a strong international reputation, which is why a record number of researchers came to Budapest for the Eurocomb'25 conference at the end of August, co-organized by Balázs Patkós. He was able to talk about the opportunities that this five-day program offered to experts from all over the world, and he also talked about how the professional jury generally decides on the topics of the presentations at a given conference. (We have also written a previous article about Eurocomb'25.) Regarding the future of combinatorics, Balázs Patkós also revealed how interested university students are today in this rapidly developing field.
